An excerpt from "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" by Dr. Seuss.
Every Who down in Who-ville, the tall and the small, Was singing! Without any presents at all.
He HADN'T stopped Christmas from coming! IT CAME! Somehow or other, it came just the same!
And the Grinch with his grinch-feet ice-cold in the snow, Stood puzzling and puzzling "How could it be so?
It came without ribbons! It came without tags! It came without packages, boxes, or bags!"
And he puzzled three hours til his puzzler was sore. Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn't before!
"Maybe Christmas," he thought, "doesn't come from a store."
"Maybe Christmas...perhaps...means a little bit more!"
This year we adopted two families for Christmas from AFL-CIO, like usual. I love doing this! I love the shopping. I love the wrapping. But I especially love the giving. We started this several years ago when I had no ideas for what TJ could get me for Christmas, so I said let me spend whatever I want on charity and adopting families and that will be my gift. We have continued it since then, but now all of us get involved, and the whole family goes on the deliveries. We get a list of wants and/or needs and then get everything we can that is on it, plus Christmas DInner, and deliver it to the family at their home. I think it means a lot to the families who are receiving, but the act of giving and the ability to give are so great that I am pretty sure I get more out of it than they do. I also think it is a wonderful tool to help teach Jackson and Cole what Christmas is really about. I also like to give a Bible or children's Christmas book, depending on the kids' age range. My favorite for young kids-"The Story of Christmas" by Patricia Pingry, one of my absolute favorite childrens authors.
We had a WONDERFUL Christmas! On Christmas morning, we opened gifts here at home, then headed over to Nana and Papa's. The boys had a great time there, and TJ and I got everything we wanted, also. Jax got his Nintendo 3ds and Cole got a great battery-powered ride-on toy, among other things. We stayed for lunch. Cole and I came home for nap, and after nap headed out to my parents house for dinner and more gift opening. Jax big gift at my parents was his KidiJamz set and Cole's favorite gifts from Grandma and Grandpa was probably noisy cars. The boys love going there, too, and were troopers all day long, with nary a fit thrown! We got home at about 9:45 with many gifts in tow, and two sleepy little boys.
The Lord bless us and keep us!

Oh, Holy Night!
I Have been sick for the last 3 days-some kind of stomach virus. But it has not slowed the 2 little monsters down-thankfully no one else in the house has caught it..
With finishing up Christmas shopping, baking cookies for Santa, and making sure every present got wrapped, maybe I am just run down, because I never get sick.
This evening was Patterson Family Christmas Eve, this year at Gary and Sue's house. This is always fun. There is always lots of good food-too bad I felt like crap. Both of the boys get gifts from aunts and uncles, and Nana and Papa. And then the adults do a grab bag, also. Jackson was very excited to play with cousins, Kaleigh and Zack Zeisel, but they were running late and were not there yet when we left. You see, we had to get home so that we could be asleep before Santa arrived.
Cole has not a clue about this Santa thing, but I am pretty sure he will be ripping into packages with the best of them tomorrow morning. Jax is very excited, and went straight to bed this evening. I just love their faces on Christmas morning. I may be just as excited as they are for morning, even though my gift is by the garage in the form of an expanded laundry room.
This is my favorite Christmas hymn and so fitting, as I want to make it abundantly clear to our children that Christmas is not about presents and Santa Claus, but about God's son who was born in a manger, lived a perfect life, and then died on the cross for our sins.
O, Holy Night!
O Holy night, the stars are brightly shining
It is the night of our dear Savior's birth
Long lay the world in sin and error pining
Til He appeared and the soul felt it's worth
A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices
For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn
Fall on your knees
O hear the angel voices
O night divine!
O night when Christ was born
O night divine!
O night, O night divine!
And in His Name, all oppression shall cease
Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we
Let all within us praise his holy name
Christ is the Lord!
Their name forever praise we
Noel, Noel
O night, O night Divine
Noel, Noel
O night, O night Divine
Noel, Noel
O night, O holy Divine

When I was a child, I spoke and thought and reasoned as a child. But when I grew up, I put away childish things 1 Corinthians 13:11
As a child, you experience the most pure love, the love of a parent. It is truly unconditional. In return, children give very little. Children love their parents very much, don't get me wrong.
I love my parents very much. As a child, they were the most important people in my life. The people I loved most in the whole world. The people I could count on, no matter what. Whether I chose the right road or went off the beaten path, they were there for me. I counted on this. I had complete trust in their unwavering love for me. I sometimes did not agree with them , but I knew they loved me and would always help me to find the direction in life that would suit me best.
As a teenager, I fell in love with a boy. Not just any boy, but the boy that I believe God chose for me to spend the rest of my life with. Wow, do I love him. This was (and still is) a very intense love. A love that I find it very hard to find words for sometimes. There is a song that says "Why can't I breathe whenever I think about you
Why can't I speak whenever I talk about you". I still feel that way. How could I ever love anyone as much as I love him?
As an adult, I became a mother. This not only changed my love for TJ-seeing the person you love as a parent somehow multiplies you love for them exponentially- but now I have this new love. This love that I did even know existed. The power of my UNCONDITIONAL love for my children makes me believe I can do things I could not otherwise do.
I would DIE for these little people. They have completed me. I think you really do not know what your heart wants until it finds it. I wanted children. They are my true love. After one child, I thought "there is no way I could possibly love someone else as much as I love this person", and then your next child is born, and your capacity for love expands to envelope them. Sometimes, it is physically painful to be away from them. I remember a conversation TJ and I had when I was pregnant. We were talking about complications of childbirth, and I asked him if he had to choose between me and our unborn child, who would he save? His response-You, of Course!, My answer to him- I would want you to save my baby. Even before either of the kids were born, I was fiercely protective of them. Motherhood has changed me forever. I will never be the same.2 days until Christmas festivities begin for us.

Oh, Daddy, What a Catch!
I was thinking today that someday the two of you (or your girlfriend/fiancee/wife) may be interested in knowing how your Dad and I met and started dating. Well, we met for the first time at a bowling alley. Then, we went to a football game together. But our first real date, where Dad picked me up and met my parents (Grandma and Grandpa Harper), was early November 1996. He was the first guy who had ever picked me up and taken me on a date. We went to a Sawyer Brown concert with his parents (Nana and Papa Patterson). It was great. And so began an amazing relationship. Just last month, Dad and I have been together for 15 years. And next year, when I turn 32, we will have been together for half of my life. Crazy to think about. We dated all the rest of high school, Dad went to Northwest Missouri State University his freshman year of college, and then transferred to UMKC when I started college there. After 3 and 1/2 years of dating, Dad asked me to marry him. He proposed on The Plaza in Kansas City by the big fountain with the horses. We got married in July 2002, on what was our 5 and 1/2 year anniversary of dating.
The following song makes me think of your Dad when I hear it, because he has always been so good to me, and now to the two of you.
What a Catch!
Mama's Song Lyrics (as sung by Carrie Underwood)
Mama you taught me to do the right things
So now you have to let your baby fly
You've given me everything that I will need
To make it through this crazy thing called life
And I know you watch me grow up
and always want whats best for me
And I think I found the answer to your prayers
And he is good, so good
He treats your little girl like a real man should
He is good, so good, he makes promises he keeps
No he's never gonna leave
So dont you worry about me
Dont you worry about me

Going to the Store, I guess.
I am going to break down and do it. I am getting an Elf on the Shelf. I mean, I have to go to the store, anyways. We are out of waffles, and for those of you who know anything about our house, you know that being out of waffles is absolutely unacceptable. Jackson had to eat a Pop Tart for breakfast. The horrors!!
So, one of my friends has been blogging about her Elf's fun locations around the house. And, as the story goes, the Elf watches the kids during the day, and then each night after they are in bed, he goes to the North Pole to report to Santa what nice (or naughty) little children they have been. I think I could use this to my advantage. I will keep you posted about our Elf (if I get to the store to get one.) Should be fun.
Cole has decided to call out "Mommy" just as I am getting ready to leave his room after I have laid him down at night. So, I go back in and ask him what he needs. Nothing, of course. Repeat. And again. Like 10 times. He knows he has me wrapped around his little finger. We have started singing the ABC's and working on colors everyday. He can repeat a few colors back to me, so maybe we are getting somewhere.
Jackson has started giving us ideas for what he wants for Christmas. Bey Blades, Nintendo DSI, scooter, remote control anything....and the list goes on. Some of these things I have never even heard of. Maybe Santa will bring them. Jackson has a jam-packed social life. Tonight, he is going to Night out with the Griffs (a fun evening put on by the Missouri Western student athletes). Tomorrow afternoon, he has a birthday party at Benji's house. Which just made me realize, duh!, I need to get a birthday present for Benji. Crap!! Guess I will be making it to the store today, after all.

Great Hair and Dimples!
All is calm, All is bright.
Yeah, right. Who am I kidding? Things are never calm around here. But, with all these Christmas lights blazing, it sure is bright.
Cole will not stop trying to plug things in and turn things on, and now that he has figured out he can just move his step stool to wherever he wants to reach things, there is no stopping him. He has slowed a bit on the removing ornaments from the tree.
Jackson can not stop playing (or asking us to play) catch and football long enough to eat (or even breathe, for that matter). Sun up to sun down!
The wrapping has begun, and somehow nothing has been unwrapped yet. I figured Cole would start unwrapping things under the tree the minute he saw them, but maybe he has not realized this is a possibility yet.
Today, I had both of the boys get haircuts. This was much needed for Jackson, in my opinion, but I only had Cole's cut because Daddy finally put his foot down. He said the sideburns had to go! I loved them. I loved how sometimes they would get brushed forward onto his cheeks, like a brooding young rebel. SO CUTE! It was absolute torture for me to get it cut today. I love Cole's hair long-he has got great hair. Baby fine but so Thick, Lots of body, a little natural wave that makes it lay just right, and beautiful natural dark blonde color with very light blonde natural highlights. I am envious. On the contrary, I love Jackson's hair very short. It is coarse and thin, the coarseness making up for the thinness. Looks great with gel in it (Dad does it for us).
While I am commenting on fantastic features, I should point out one of my favorite features on Jackson. Anyone who has ever seen him smile can already guess what I am going to say, but I will say it anyway. The kid has KILLER dimples. I mean, like, "Girls, watch out!" These are heartbreaking dimples, and boy, does he know it.
Funny, since neither TJ or I has dimples, but then again, neither of us have Cole's blue eyes either.
More differences to point out- Jackson's olive skin and dark hair (from my Dad's side of the family-American Indian) vs Cole's fair skin and blonde hair(TJ was a platinum blonde as a child-Irish and German roots).
Like I always say, Genetics is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're going to get (to paraphrase Forrest Gump).

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas
Well, the tree is up and decorated, thanks to the help of Jackson and Cole-sort of. TJ has been working hard on getting the lights up on the outside of the house, interesting work with only 2 outlets outside. I love having all the decorations up. Cole likes to remove all the decorations! He takes them off the tree, and tries to put them back on, but they all end up on the floor. Only 2 broken so far!
Jackson is really becoming a reader. I love to hear him read. It is so fascinating to me. Friends told me at the beginning of the school year that he would be reading by Christmas, and I thought, "No Way!" Boy, was I wrong. He has lots of sight words, but those that he does not recognize he sounds out. My heart just sings when he figures out a new, difficult word.
Cole got both of his top two-year molars. I thought it would be much more painful(for everyone-think lost sleep), but he didn't have them one day, and the next morning when I got him out of his crib, he pointed to his mouth. I stuck my finger in and, lo and behold, two new teeth. He is still not a huge talker, but can repeat many things we say. He is going to be my strong, silent one...
The boys' favorite things to do together are wrestle and chase. Cole is the instigator in both of these scenarios.
He will push Jax down (ok, so Jax kind of falls down on purpose after Cole pushes him), and then Cole will jump on top and tackle him. It is quite the sight. The chase game is mostly after they get out of the bathtub. They run up and down the hall upstairs completely naked, chasing each other-mostly Cole chasing Jax. Then Jax will hide, and Cole will look for him, and then it starts all over again. I think they would do this for hours if we would let them. And they are both laughing and screaming the entire time. TJ and I just sit in our room and laugh.
Thanksgiving was great. Lots of good food, family, and fun.
We ate lunch at Denny and Connie's, then headed out to my parents for dinner.
What a blessing to get to spend the holidays with family.

Halloween
Catching UP!
It has been a while since I wrote.
Last week, we had Jackson's first Parent-Teacher Conference. It went well. Mrs. Houser had only good things to say about Jackson. I have to say, I could sit and listen to someone say great things about my kid all day. It was a thoroughly pleasant experience. The day before our meeting with Mrs. Houser, Jackson came home sick from school for the first time. So, after having perfect attendance for the first quarter, he missed a day of the first week of the second quarter.
Yesterday was Halloween, anad the boys had a great time. After much deliberation, Jackson decided to be Bumblebee from Transformers. I bought Cole a Tiger costume, and he wore it for pictures. When it came down to Halloween evening, Cole was about 6 weeks overdue for a haircut, so with that much hair, I decided to give him a faux-Hawk and have him trick-or-treat as a punk rocker. We started out the evening going to a few houses that were not in our neighborhood (Doris and Stan Hall's, Cheri and Bill Patterson's, Grandma-Too's, Nana and Papa's and some other houses on their cul-de-sac, and then Jerry and Debby Daniel, and the Veligati's). Meanwhile, my Mom came over and handed out candy at our house until we got back. Cole hit a few houses in our neighborhood, then stayed back with Grandma and ate dinner while Jax and I finished out the neighborhood. By about 8:30, we had lots of candy and 2 very tired little boys.
Some Cole info: He is starting to repeat many words that we say. Last night, he would say "Trick-Treat". He has started running at me and throwing his arms around my legs and hugging them. It is so sweet. He emjoys taking walks in the jogging stroller, and still wants to be outside all the time. He loves to sit in his rocking chair in his room and "read" by himself. He would spend entire days of his life opening and shutting doors. I do not see the fascination, but then again, I am not 1 and 1/2 years old. He can not get enough of chasing Jackson around the house, and Jackson is a really good sport, and allows it most of the time. I hope they will be the best of friends.
I am sure I have missed some events from the last 2 weeks, and I really do mean to post more often, but somehow the time just gets away from me. I vow to try to post more often. After all, this is my way of holding on to the memories of Jax and Cole's childhood for them.
"Memory is a way of holding on to the things you love, the things you are, the things you never want to lose."
In the last week or so, I have become re-addicted to the Twilight series, watching all 3 movies again and rereading the final book, Breaking Dawn, all to get geared up for the 4th movie coming out on November 18th. A line from the book that really touched me is in the locket Bella gives to her daughter. It says "more than my own life". I love this quote.
Another quote I love: For my kids-

After All, You're The Only One Who Knows
What My Heart Sounds Like From The Inside
Dreading Winter
Well, Jackson had another big day on the soccer field. 3 goals (4 if you ask him-which is entirely possible, since I was trying to keep Cole in my sights much of the time.) Cole is not one to sit quietly and watch-SHOCKER, I know! It was a beautiful day today, Sunny and 70, and we spent every moment of it outside from about 8am (gametime) until about 5:30pm (dinnertime). We probably will not get a lot more days like this again until spring. I am dreading Winter. Usually, I would be dreading it purely out of my own selfishness and dislike for the cold weather, but this year I am dreading it for the boys, too. All that indoor time is bound to drive one of us crazy-most likely ME! Okay, that is still selfish, but they just love the outdoors so much.
Cole is now saying "No". This is about the only word I was not looking forward to him learning. But other things he has started saying- Thank You, and repeating many other words when someone says them now. I think I am finally done worrying about his speech. Well, now I will worry about how clear it is instead.
Jackson is getting very good about "Please" and "Thank You". About time, I think. He has finally learned he gets things he wants much more quickly and readily if he asks for them nicely. Jackson and Cole are playing really well together right now, but Cole does not like Jax to help him with anything. Getting up, getting out of the truck, playing, etc. This is where his new "No" is coming into play alot.

The Good Life!
What a wonderful weekend...
Friday, after Jackson got on the bus, Cole and I hung out in the morning-doing yardwork. We planted grass seed and added mulch to the landscaping. Then Jeana and I left for Columbia. We ate dinner at Shakespeare's with Collin. Then we headed to Greek Town to see the house decks. After that, we met Tom and Annie Rhoad at Harpo's. A late night for us, we were in by 11:15. The next morning, we headed downtown to catch part of the Homecoming parade, then went to the book store, then off to tailgate. Tigers beat Iowa State 52-17. Yeah! I got to spend the first quarter of the game with Matt and Amanda and Benson, visiting.
Jackson had a soccer game Saturday morning. He scored twice, once in each goal. HaHa.
Cole has a few more new words. Please, Knock-Knock, pizza.
Today, I took the boys to the pumpkin patch. Ireland went with us. They had a great time. They rode the train, roasted marshmallows to make S'More's, played in the hay maze, and on the swingsets. Then we picked out pumpkins (and apples for snacks on the way home), and left.
This evening, we met Nana and Papa, and Coby, Kerry, Brielle, and Alexandra for pizza at Pizza Shoppe.
Ok, so nothing too exciting, but this is our life. The Good Life!

What's in a name?
I was thinking today about the names that we chose for the two of you. I am sure you have heard a hundred times, but I will tell you again.
Jackson is named after my grandfather John "Jack" Wesley Harper. And after TJ's dad, Dennis Orien Patterson and his great-grandfather, Orien Johnson Patterson.
Cole, Dad picked that name. Named after Cole Trickle from the movie, "Days of Thunder". And the middle name, Maddox, was very random. I typed the name Cole into the Parents website name-finder, and it was picking middle names that went well with it. When it came up with Maddox, I looked up the meaning, "a child of God, a fortunate person", and then called TJ and said the name Cole Maddox to him, and he loved it. It was decided right then.
Since we did not find out the gender of the baby with either pregnancy (well, Dad found out with Cole), we went to the hospital with a girl name, too. Had either of you been a girl, the name would have been Ava Harper (my maiden name) Annabel (Dad's grandma) Patterson.
These names are very special to us-it is kind of a big deal choosing a name someone will have to live with for their entire life. I hope we did OK by the two of you.
Psalm 139:14
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
Your works are wonderful, I know that full well.

Noone Like You
Cole had quite a few new words today, so I thought I should record the event for posterity (i.e. his baby book).
Truck, Quack, Papa, ball.
He is also doing this adorable thing we are calling "Happy Feet". When he is getting ready to run or dance, he moves his feet really fast, like he is tap-dancing or something. It is so cute, and if you do it, he will start doing it, too. Love the pitter-patter of little feet.
Jackson has a thing for patterns-he is always pointing out when something has a pattern, whether it be colors, words, numbers. It is great.

the moon shone with such wonder,
that the stars peeked in to see you,
and the night wind whispered,
'Life will never be the same'
Because there had never been
anyone like you...
ever in the world."

the Little Things
Once again, it has been much too long since my previous blog.
A lot has happened in the interim. Not anything big or exciting, but a lot of day-to-day things. You know, the little things...
Cole has some new words. Owee(when he falls down), cheese, Clock, and amen. He loves to spin or run in circles until he is dizzy and then fall down. It is very funny to watch. He also likes to do anything that Jackson does, GOOD or BAD! This evening, Jackson was tryong to kick something out of my hand, and got scolded. Sure enough, here comes Cole, doing the same thing. He still can hardly stand to be inside for long periods of time. He also has a lot more teeth, 4 total on top now, and 6 total on bottom. Those last four coming through were pretty rough.
Jackson is having a good Fall season, loving soccer-scored 5 goals in 1 game, and 3 in another. YEAH!
Last week, TJ and I went to Los Cabos, Mexico with Reserve National. It was wonderful, but of course, we missed the boys like crazy! Jeana and Ryan came here to stay with Jackson so he did not have to alter his routine, getting on and off the bus each day. Cole went out and stayed at Grandma and Grandpa Harper's house. Jackson joined him out there on Friday after school. They had a lot of fun.
In Cabo, we mostly laid by the pool or played in the ocean. The waves were crazy big, and people were constantly getting knocked off their feet in the surf. We did a little body surfing-not the most comfortable sport(I had sandburn on my butt!). LOTS of sand in your suit. On Saturday, I went with the Schuster family on a sailing day trip. It was fantastic. The captain was great, and I even got to learn a little about sailing and sail the boat for a few minutes. Wow!
Then home on Sunday, Grandma kept the boys awake a little late so we could see them when we got here.
We are gearing up for a gender reveal party for Ryan and Jeana and Baby Harper. They will find out what they are having the first week of November, so we will be having a get-together for them that Saturday at our house. I am excited to know what it is going to be.
This weekend, Jeana and I are going to the Missouri Homecoming Football Game. 100th Anniversary of Homecoming at Mizzou! TJ is staying home with the boys, and going to the game the following weekend (Kenz turns 21, so they will be partying hard!). I will be home with the boys that weekend.
It was so good to come home to my sweet little boys Sunday evening. Getting to read their bedtime books and kiss them goodnight made an entire days worth of traveling completely worthwhile. I can not think of a single thing I would rather see first thing in the morning than the sleepy smiles on those boys faces. And they are the last thing I think of when I go to bed at night. My little miracles!

Stay Beautiful
A few things happened this week.
Cole has a cold. And he got another tooth. Not a good combination.
He also has a few new words- "sthat" is What's That, he can say Jax...and fish...
Love his sweet little hugs and how he waves at the bus all the way down the road until it is out of sight when Jax gets on in the morning.
Jackson is enjoying school, and we are still trying to work on a few things at home-sight words, some reading easy words and books. This is what his teacher had to say when I emailed her this week.
Hi. Thanks for your note. I just finished my beginning of the year testing so I do have info. to share with you! When I checked him on letters of the alphabet - he knew all caps but N and Y. We just covered Nn last week so I bet he gets that one now! Lower case - he can review efglqrtu and typewriter g. He know most of the sounds associated with consonant letters - q, w, and y were two tough ones for him but we cover our sounds and have a wonderful program for this so I wouldn't worry too much about that. He also had a hard time with the vowel sounds but again, we will cover that during the year...so no worries. This just gives me a good idea about how he came into the classroom and what I need to focus on with him. The main thing right now is when you read with him - focus on the concepts about print - where do I start to read? Put your finger on that word. Then where do I go? See if he follows left-right and top to bottom progression. He can point to the words as you read. I would recommend that he read back to you the booklets we make at school - save them and reread them as well. Talk about the characters, the setting, the problem of the story. See how much he is comprehending as you read aloud to him. Right now that is the best homework everyday - to read together. I have noticed he loves to be read to. He is also a good problem solver in math. He loves a challenge. More on our math will be coming home this week - I try not to send it all home at one time because I don't want to overwhelm people!!! With writing, we write everyday and sometimes he waits until the last minute to do something (not sure if he doesn't want to write or just waits!!!!). I would recommend letting him do some writing at home because it's good practice. Let him help write out a grocery list and sound out words - he may write mk for milk or cnde for candy and that is ok! I will give you lots more information at our first parent-teacher conference in October but until then, he is on the right track and is doing well. I focus a lot right now on paying attention, using good manners, etc. and he is adjusting to that for me. The main thing I am impressed with is his attitude towards school - he loves it and I love having him! Thanks for caring! Julie
When asked if there is anything we need to work on, her response-
no not at all - I do have to remind him to get busy sometimes but he loves to please so I can quickly get him to pay attention. He is bright and loves to be challenged. I am still working with him on not shouting out because he does know the answers!!!! He is doing much better with that though - he is the bright spot in my day. I really love having kids like him!!!! Thanks for sharing him with me. He makes my day!
Yesterday was Jackson's second soccer game, but the first one I was able to attend. It was fun, although I was reminded why I never liked soccer when Ryan was a kid.
Last night, I took Brielle and her friend Jordan to the Taylor Swift concert. It was a lot of fun. We stopped at Zona Rosa on the way down, hit lots of traffic, and the concert was awesome. She sang almost every song from her "Speak Now" album, and some from her "Fearless" album. What a great show!

They are my kids!
Well, it has been a while. Our last week has been pretty full.
Cole has added quite a few words in the last week.
Sorry
Milk
Thank you
Ball
saying some of the words he had already said a couple of times much better.
On Monday, the Robertson's left on vacation to Disney World, which would not really affect us except that Jackson seems a little lost at home in the evenings without his best friend, Ireland. He found lots of other friends in the neighborhood to play with, and had a lot of fun. Monday was also Jackson's first soccer practice. Since TJ had an appointment, and I had to work until 5:30, and practice was at 4:30, so Nana got to take him to his first practice. Same situation this week, so Grandma is taking him to practice tomorrow.
Wednesday, TJ and I got out our 10-gallon fish tank and went to the pet store and got Jackson some fish. Their names are Optimus Prime (a Bala Shark), Megatron (Iridescent Shark), Tiger and Cougar (Tiger Barbs), and Bumblebee, Jackson and Ireland (Headlight and Taillight Tetras). He is super excited about them and loves checking on them and feeding them. Cole thinks they are great, too!
Thursday, I went to Kirksville to spend the day with Amanda, Benson, and Brynley. It was wonderful. We hung out at the house in the morning (Matt was there some), went to Jimmy John's for lunch, then took a nice walk at a trail in town. Back to Amanda's house. On the way back, we asked Benson where his Daddy worked. He pondered this for a moment, and then responded, with childlike candor, "On the Couch.", Amanda and I could not help laughing. She put Benson down for a nap, I made dinner for them, and then we sat down and watched an episode of 90210 while she nursed Brynley. Then, it was about time for me to head home. Too short of a trip. I got to stop in Brookfield and eat dinner with Aunt Pam and Uncle Jeff on the way home. I had not seen them since Easter, so that was really nice.
Friday, Nana and Papa went to Grandparents Day Lunch at school with Jackson. Apparently, the food was horrendous(not surprising). They said it was really fun, otherwise. Jackson really liked that they got to come.
Saturday, I had to work, but Jackson had his first soccer game. Dad handled both boys all by himself. SUPERDAD!
After I got off work, we all went down to the Hi-HO for dinner, and TJ stayed to watch the rest of the Missouri game. The boys and me came home, played, and then they went to bed.
This morning when Jackson came downstairs he asked me, "Mom, can I have the day off today?" -Of course, since today is Sunday, I told him that would be fine. Too funny, you would think he had been worked every day for months.
They know me in a way no one ever has,
They open me to things I never knew existed,
The drive me to insanity and push me to my depths,
They are the best of my heart, the pulse of my veins,
and the energy in my soul.
They are my kids!
They are the best of my heart, the pulse

Don't Blink
Well, Labor Day has come and gone. And what a drastic change in weather it brought. After weeks upon weeks this summer of 90-100 degree weather, The mornings are crisp, the windows are open, and the entire neighborhood is outside. It has been absolutely beautiful. Although I never complain of the heat, I have to say, this is kinda nice. I just hope it lasts until mid-November. Ha, I am fooling myself!
My new goal is to start adding pictures to the blog. You know, mix things up a bit. The only problem is, we only download pictures every couple of months or so. Nonetheless, I am going to give it a shot.
This pic is of Jax 2nd day of kindergarten. Cole felt that he should help his brother wait for the bus. I thought this was too cute to miss.
I have a new favorite thing! Holding Cole's hand. I LOVE it! When he wants to hold my hand, he looks up at me, says "Mama", and holds his little hand up. Adorable. Then, the way it feels in my hand, so soft, little-kid squishy, and MINE. I vow not to take this for granted. I know, all too soon, he will not be wanting to hold my hand. I will just be dorky old Mom, and he will be embarrassed to hold my hand. But for now, I get to experience this numerous times per day.
This time that I have the two of you little (OK, Jax is not so little anymore) is so precious to me. I know in the blink of an eye it will be gone. Thank you for the daily hugs and kisses, and remember you are never too old to kiss your Mama and tell her that you love her.
Mom, I know you read this sometimes. I love you!
Don't Blink
Just like that you're six years old and you take a nap and ya'
Wake up and you're twenty-five and your high school sweetheart becomes your wife
Don't Blink
just might miss your babies growin' like mine did
Turning into moms and dads; next thing you know your better half
of fifty years is there in bed
And you're praying God takes you instead
Trust me friend, a hundred years goes faster than you think
So Don't Blink

Ready, Set, GO!!
This is Cole's new saying. We say the Ready-and he says "Set, GO"-not quite that clearly, of course. But it is sooo cute. Jill Robertson and I took Cole for a walk this afternoon while Jackson played at Ireland's. Perfect. TJ was golfing in KC.
Jackson starts soccer practice next week. TJ and I have very mixed emotions about this. Neither of us are really soccer fans-to be quite honest, it nearly bores us to death. But, we will be attending practices and games very soon, so we might as well get over it. I am excited for Jax, though, because I think he will not only really enjoy playing soccer, but also be really good at it. He seems very athletic. Just this past spring, TJ wanted to teach him how to dribble a basketball, and before he could show him anything, Jax was like, "Like this, Dad?", and he was dribbling the ball around. So then TJ is like, "OK, now move and do it". No problem. "OK, now do it without looking at the ball". Again, no problem. He seems to be a natural.
Life changes so quickly. I am just glad that I am able to document so many things that are happening in our life.
The more milestones we hit, the more I realize that is one less milestone left. I want to cherish every moment. One of the best decisions TJ and I have made for our family is moving to this neighborhood. I am so glad for our children that they will grow up surrounded by other children they call Friends

Like riding a Bike!
Cole may be a talker yet. This week, Cole had what we will tentatively call a vocabulary explosion. Adding such words to his repertoire as "bye", "hot", "out", "poo-poo", and "hi". I suppose we will not be asking for a speech pathology consultation at the 18-month well-check on Wednesday after all. Yeah!!!
Jackson is doing awesome with his sight words. Only three days in, and he already has about 15 he knows pretty well. I told him if he learns 5 new ones tomorrow, we will go get ice cream. Incentive for him and myself.
TJ and I went to the Mizzou Football game today. We drove to Columbia last night, ate at Shakespeare's Pizza, and then went out. We started at the Penguin, but it was dead, so we moved on to Shiloh's, which was a happening place. My cousin, Collin Artinger, who is a student at Mizzou, met us there, so we got to hang out with him-It was great, I had not seen him in over a year! The boys (TJ and Don Chancey) went down to buy tickets this morning, and I took a leisurely stroll through campus, stopping in the quad in front of Jesse Hall to see the Columns, and going to the bookstore. The game was blistering hot, but the Tigers won, so it was worth sitting there.
Jackson and Cole stayed here with Grandma Harper, and then went out to her house today after nap so that they could spend some time with Grandpa, too.
I am so excited the boys are learning new things. Learning to read (and enjoying it) is something that is very important in life, and I am happy to see my children making great strides toward becoming functioning members of society.

The first few weeks
Well, our Internet has been down, so I have not been able to post in a while. But, we are back.
Blessings to report! Brynley Ryan Heeren made her miraculous appearance in the world last Sunday, August 29, at 1:22pm, weighing 7lbs 10oz, and was 20inches long. TJ and I drove out to KV to see her and her parents at the hospital on Monday. I think she looks like Amanda as a baby, except without Snickers in her cheeks-Haha. Mom and baby are well.
Lots of early-outs from school these first few weeks. Kind of nice. Helps make the transition a little smoother, I think. Jackson seems to like kindergarten, but has somehow forgotten all of the rules here at home. Like listening to Mom and Dad, and not throwing huge fits when he does not get what he wants. Apparently, these are extremely difficult concepts. We have had to resort to making him stay inside and not play with any neighborhood friends. this is an especially cruel form of torture for a five-year-old boy.
I am going to start working on reading with him in the next few weeks. I bought sight word flash cards this morning. A few words each day and I figure he will be reading in no time. At least, that is my hope.

School Days!
Well, this is Jackson's second week of kindergarten, and I thought he was getting the hang of things. The bus seemed to be going well, he likes his teacher, and is enjoying being with his classmates. He even ate his first school lunch today. Hot Ham and Cheese. SO...., TJ and I were waiting for the bus yesterday afternoon, and when it pulled up, Jackson did not get off. I waited...., and waited...., and finally asked the driver if he was on there. The driver says "No". Then, a little girl sticks her head out the window and says, "Did he have on a brown shirt today?" Which he did, and so I answered yes. She says, "He got off at the last stop". Yes that's right! My kindergartner decided he wanted to go to a friend's house and just happened to forget to consult Mom first. Thankfully, they live just up the hill, and by the time I figured out where he got off, they were walking him home. Obviously, he got a bit of a talking-to. But, I was just so relieved to know where he was, I could not be very mad. I am also not surprised at all, he is such an independent kid who thinks there is no such thing as a stranger. Kinda scary! I think this will turn out to be a fabulous character trait, but for now, I want to lock him in the closet until he turns 18.
I would probably have to put Cole in there with him, because he misses him like crazy when he is away at school. But he loves to sit outside with him in the morning to wait for the bus, and go out in the afternoon to wait for him to get home.

Kindergarten Begins! (and other new stuff)
Yesterday was Jackson's first day of kindergarten. All was going smoothly until it came time to catch the bus (which he insisted on riding the very first day-apparently he is too cool to have Mom take him). It is pouring down rain, and we see the bus coming down the street, so Jackson runs to the bottom of the driveway, and the bus just drives right on by. So, Plan B, we hop into the car and chase it to the next neighborhood, and catch it there. Swell!
I gane the bus time to get to school, then went and saw Jackson and took some pictures of him in his classroom. He was acclimated already, and waved goodbye like the outgoing little man he is. No hugs for me! I guess better that than him screaming and clinging to my leg for dear life. He also decided to ride the bus home, so when he got here, I asked him how his day was. "Good" ....Yeah, that's right. The first day of kindergarten, and all I get in explanation is a good. No elaboration. I think they should videotape the entire first day, so I (and other parents like me) would have something to write in the baby book, blog, etc...
On another note, Cole got another tooth. His bottom right cuspid. It made him very fussy yesterday. I am glad it is through.
Today, we were playing outside, and I asked him if he wanted to put gas in his little red car. He opened the gas tank, then went over to the yard, pulled some "grass", and put it in. Apparently, he thinks it is a grass tank.
TJ and Cole were playing this morning, and they were racing. TJ must have said "Ready, Set, Go!" about 100 times. Well, finally, Cole started saying "Go!". Now, if he would just start using all these one-time (or one day) words more regularly, I could stop worrying about his speech. Little Monster.
I was at Wal-Mart the other day, and I found the cutest little Missouri Tigers fleece sleeper, but with a hood. I got one for Cole, but then I thought "this would be perfect for ball games", so I got one for Benson. And, it was so darn cute, I could hardly stand it, so I got one for Lincoln, too. I am hoping Cole can wear his for Halloween. They are adorable.
For Jackson:
Remember today, for it is the beginning of always. Today marks the start of a brave new future filled with all your dreams can hold. Think truly to the future and make those dreams come true.

True Friends
Well, another week has flown by and now there are only a few pre-kindergarten days left for Jackson.
We had a really fun weekend. Thursday, we spent a little time at Robertson's pool.
Friday, Jackson had back-to school might at Coleman. He got to meet his teacher, drop off his school supplies, and see his classroom. That evening he played with friends in the neighborhood.
Saturday, we went to Kirksville for Benson Heeren's 2nd birthday party. A little about the Heeren family. First of all, Benson has got to be one of the most adorable children I have ever seen. He has blond hair and blue eyes and beautiful skin. He is going to be an absolute heartbreaker. Not only that, but he has this amazingly sweet disposition. And the boy LOVES baseball, much to the joy of his parents, Matt and Amanda. It was so cute to watch him run aruond the yard playing baseball all by himself. I am on pins and needles about their next little one, who is due in just a few short weeks. I find myself thinking daily about whether they will have a girl or a boy, what he/she will look like, and what a lucky kid that will be to have Matt and Amanda as parents. They make it look so effortless and garner such joy from the simple act of parenting!
The ride to and from Kirksville was not all it's cracked up to be. Cole fussed all the way there, and nearly all the way home, taking a break for a short hour-long nap. I informed him I do not want to be in a car with him for longer than an hour until he is at least 2. But he was wonderful while we were at the Heeren's, so I really shouldn't complain. He lasted until 3pm without any nap at all, and was still being really good. Jackson, of course, handled the car rides like the old pro he is, and was also very good at the Party. He even got to pull the winning string from the pinata.
Something I am very excited about in the boys future is growing up seeing these friends, Benson and unnamed Baby Heeren, and Lincoln and Emery Brown. I hope they become the kind of friends we have found in their parents. A lifetime of memories may they have together.
I could not pick one quote today, so I picked a few.
Yesterday brought the beginning, tomorrow brings the end, and somewhere in the middle we became the best of friends. ~Author Unknown

Picnic in The Park
Cole said shoes twice this morning, got his 6th tooth yesterday, and his favorite trick right now is to do forward rolls. He is also a climber, and will climb on anything to get to turn lights or fans off and on-one of his favorite pasttimes. This could get dangerous.
Jackson can hardly stand to be away from a pool for longer than about 12 hours. Thankfully, the Robertson's across the street have one and are very welcoming of an extra 5-year old. Rude awakening coming when they all close in a couple of weeks.
Today, we had a picninc in the park with Grandma Harper. The food consisted of everyone's favorite, Panera!
After playing there for a while, we came back here, Cole took a nap, and Jax and I went to Robertson's for some pool time.
